The best part of the spring semester at OSU happened Thursday night; Dragonfly is OSU’s annual drag show whose proceeds (more than $2500 this year) go to The Equality Network, which advocates for LGBT rights in Oklahoma.

This is my third year shooting it for the O’Colly (see my 2011 and 2012 recaps), and it seems that it only gets better each year I attend.  Each show involves student contestants – the “amateurs” – as well as professional drag queens from Oklahoma City and a “special guest” – this year it was Chad Michaels, who placed third on season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and won All Stars Drag Race.

Check out my photos below. These are always my favorite photos of the year, and I’m going to miss getting a chance to shoot it every year.

OSU Student Activities Board’s ‘Dragonfly’ is Oklahoma’s largest drag show. The event happens every spring, and the theme for 2012’s show was ‘Glamazons of the Amazon.’

Dragonfly was hosted by professional drag queen Jak’kay Monroe. The show featured an amateur competition made up of members of OSU student organizations, as well as professional drag queens Carmen Deveraux, Cordilla Monroe, Vanity Halston, Jexa van de Kamp and professional drag king Damian Matrix. This year’s special guest was Raja (pictured above), winner of season 3 of LOGO’s RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Proceeds from this year’s event went to The Equality Network.

Homecoming and Hoops is an annual event the night before OSU’s homecoming where the men and women’s basketball teams scrimmage with themselves. It takes place in Gallagher-Iba arena, and the whole event feels a lot like a gigantic pep rally. Some minor homecoming awards are also announced during the event, so Greek houses and other student organizations turn out in droves to attend.

Football’s back! Aaaaand I almost melted at The Walk Saturday. But I got some good photos, so I’m over it.

(for those not in the know, The Walk is a tradition at OSU where the football players, who stay the night in the on-campus Atherton hotel the night before home games, walk through campus from the Atherton to the stadium before the game while fans cheer them on.)

OSU is legendary in the sport of wrestling, with 34 national championships, 134 individual NCAA championships and more than 1,000 wins (the only other school to surpass this mark is Iowa State). Today’s team is living up to tradition, with outstanding individual wrestlers like Jordan Oliver (above), Chris Perry, Jamal Parks and Albert White (who suffered a spinal injury last January and was back on the mat competing again by the beginning of the 2011-2012 season). The Cowboys have only recorded one loss this season, which came at the hands of Minnesota in a nail-biting showdown at the National Duels Finals in Stillwater a few weeks ago.

I shot four wrestling matches for the O’Colly this semester. Wrestling is a sport unlike any other I’ve ever attended. The atmosphere is surprisingly intimate for taking place in an arena as large as Gallagher-Iba. The audience members treat each wrestler as if they’re family, shouting out words of encouragement during matches and applauding regardless of a win or loss. And while I still don’t really understand all of the technicalities (okay, most of the technicalities) of wrestling, I can definitely say that it’s something that I enjoy watching. I have a new-found respect for wrestlers now that I’ve become more familiar with the sport and have realized just how much it takes to compete at a school like Oklahoma State. And it doesn’t hurt that they make some awesome photo subjects.

Check out my favorite shots of the season below!
